Engineering giant ABB has won an order worth $30 million (£18m) to supply a high-voltage export cable system for an offshore wind farm in the UK.
It will design and commission the 25-kilometre submarine cable and related offshore substation cable that will transmit power from DONG Energy’s Burbo Bank Extension wind farm.
The extension will have an estimated generating capacity of 258MW – enough to power around 240,000 households.
The Burbo Bank wind farm – located on the Bubo Flats in Liverpool Bay - currently includes 25 wind turbines and can generate up to 90MW of clean electricity.
Claudio Facchin, Head of ABB’s Power Systems Division said: “Offshore wind is making an increasing contribution to boost the share of renewables in Europe’s energy mix and this project will support the UK government’s efforts in this area.”
