Total makes ‘very promising’ oil find off Ivory Coast

France’s Total has announced it discovered oil in a deep offshore area in the west of the Ivory Coast.

It is the company’s first discovery in the San Pedro Basin but the second oil find in a year in the West African nation.

In April last year, the oil giant announced its first find within Ivory Coast’s eastern waters.

Marc Blaizot, Senior Vice President for Exploration at Total said: "Having confirmed the presence of a petroleum system containing light oil, we will next evaluate this very promising find and focus on its extension to the north and east.”

The French multinational is pursuing its intensive exploration programme in the area, with plans to drill two wells in by end of the year.
