Keele University's energy managing meets international standard

Keele University has become one of the first in the UK to have its Energy Management System certified to the internationally recognised ISO 50001 standard.

The university based in Stoke-on-Trent brought in energy management specialists digitalenergy to help implement its system, which was judged to have met the standard by certification services firm CICS.

The system currently covers a wide range of academic buildings – from classrooms to lecture theatres to teaching labs – which serve roughly 1,650 staff and 10,000 students.

Tim Watts, Operations Manager at CICS said: “With rising energy costs, proactive energy management is a necessity for any university these days.  As well as helping to manage energy better, focusing on this area also leads to environmental benefits, such as the reduction of carbon emissions, something which prospective students factor into their choice of where to study.”

Earlier this month Low Energy Company launched its energy saving certification scheme at London Zoo.
