Scottish energy firm secures Chinese wind contract

A Scottish renewable energy consultancy is to provide support for the development of a Chinese province's first offshore wind farm.

SgurrEnergy, part of energy services provider Wood Group, has signed a two-year contract to advise Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI) on areas such as wind farm layout, site selection and design and conduct an environmental impact assessment for the Chinese firm's Zhuhai offshore wind project in Guangdong.

The company was also involved in the Jiangsu offshore wind farm and has been working with the Chinese offshore wind industry since 2007.

Scottish Minister for External Affairs Humza Yousaf was present at the signing in Beijing and said the new deal is an example of how Scottish companies are providing both know-how and technology to support the growing Chinese renewables industry.

He added: "It is another positive step forward in strengthening Sino-Scottish links and confirming Scotland's reputation as a global leader in the development of renewable energy."

Last month the “first” electricity grid research facility in Europe was officially opened in Scotland.
