Skyscraper Tower 42 hits height of energy efficiency

The City of London’s first skyscraper is set to hit new heights – in energy efficiency, that is.

The 600ft Tower 42 (pictured centre, to the left of the Gherkin) has just upgraded and expanded its system for collecting energy data.

Originally known as the NatWest Tower because of its first owner, Tower 42 is now run by BNP Paribas Real Estate (BNPPRE) and is home to offices and a restaurant with city-wide views.

Daniel Harris, Technical Services Manager at Tower 42 said energy management and sustainability is a “high priority” for the building.

Energy consultancy Carbon 2018 which carried out the work said the site now benefits from over 150 sub meters, all of which are now connected to an automatic meter reading (AMR) system.

These will help the tower divvy up charges for tenants and landlords as well as when preparing energy management reports.

Joanne Merry, Technical Director at Carbon 2018 explained: “Carbon 2018 is working closely with BNPPRE to put in place a closed loop strategy whereby data is received and analysed, anomalies are identified and then acted upon and feedback is provided. This cycle is critical to energy management and reducing energy usage (and costs) within the building.”
