Energy Solutions Manager, Northern Rail Ltd

Northern Rail plays a vital role in the north of England by connecting tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day. Northern Rail are owned by a 50:50 joint venture between Serco Group plc, the international services company, and Abellio. There are over 4,800 employees, 2,500 train services every weekday, which call at over 500 stations, of which Northern manage 463, making Northern Rail the largest train operator in the UK.

Gareth is the Energy Solutions Manager of Northern Rail employed to create and manage the climate change strategy of the company which includes all relevant involvement with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and the associated carbon reduction targets. In order to manage energy more effectively he has integrating an Energy Management System, to the ISO 50001 Standard, into the corporate ISO 14001 accredited Environmental Management System. Work streams include collating all relevant energy data, setting area energy budgets, sustainable design eco-stations, eco-driving, efficient lighting schemes, voltage optimisation, renewable energy and behavioural change campaigns.

Prior to joining Northern Rail, Gareth worked as an environmental manager for the surface transport section of Transport for London on issues such as hybrid and hydrogen fuelled buses, energy management, air quality, waste, pollution prevention and EMS. He is a member of IEMA and the EI and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2003 with an MSC in Environmental Engineering.

Gareth will be a speaker at ELN's Energy Masterclass in Manchester on March 26th.
