Energy-efficient vessels aid CO2 targets

International shipping firm Maersk Line is hoping its new energy efficient vessels will help it reduce CO2 emissions.

Maersk has ordered 10 of the world's largest container vessels, which are 400 metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres tall.

The makers claim they will reduce CO2 emission by 50% more per container than the industry average.

The Triple-E containers - so called because of their economy of scale, energy efficiency, and environmentally improved construction - could save up to 10% of main engine power with their waste heat recovery system.

This saving equals the average annual electricity use of 5,000 European households.
