Ikea phases out incandescent light bulbs in US

Ikea has stopped selling lighting supplies equipped with incandescent light bulbs in the US.

The move comes ahead of a 2012 deadline set by the government to comply with the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

Ikea is the first major retailer in the US to phase out the bulbs, which it started this week.

"Ikea is committed to integrating sustainable practices into our range and business practices," said Mike Ward, president of Ikea US. "Eliminating incandescents is just one simple way for Ikea customers to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases."

Last year, Ikea announced plans to fit solar panels on nine stores, seven in California and one each in New Jersey and Massachusetts.
