Green day for Glastonbury as solar panels go up

Worthy Farm in Glastonbury, venue for the world famous annual music festival, has installed a privately-run solar power plant on its land.

The facility has been built on the cowhouse of the farm, run by Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis.

"The solar plant is our figurehead," said Eavis. "This has brought us one big step closer to our goal of operating the farm as ecologically as possible."

The 200KW power plant is run by Solarsense UK and is fitted with SolarMax inverters bought from British renewable company Sundog Energy.

The inverters convert the direct current from more than 1,100 solar modules into grid-compliant alternating current, generating enough power for 40 households with energy and cutting 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
