Morgan Lovell first to achieve BS EN 16001

Green office design and build firm Morgan Lovell has become the first company in the UK to achieve certification from the BSI to new energy management standard, BS EN 16001.

The company carried out an energy overhaul of its London office, which included fitting smart meters and introducing technology to power-down computers when they are not used.

It also fitted movement-sensor lighting and a heating and cooling system which harnesses any heat rejected in areas being cooled and uses it to warm other parts of the building.

Since introducing these measures, Morgan Lovell has cut its energy bills by around 30% a year.

The company's head of marketing Paul Kelly told delegates at Sustainability Live that Morgan Lovell wanted to "walk the talk" on energy saving.

"We wanted a third-party benchmark of our performance," he said, explaining that a key factor was getting staff on board with the initiative.

"We pulled everybody out of their day jobs to talk about energy management."

Kelly added that achieving the standard had left Morgan Lovell "confident in terms of the CRC".
