English councils offered £2m to tackle air pollution
Local authorities in England can bid for a share of at least £2 million to tackle air pollution.
The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) will provide the funding to councils that have one or more Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs).
Local authorities have been carrying out reviews and assessments of air quality in their areas, which includes measuring air pollution and forecasting how it will change in the next few years.
The aim is to ensure the national air quality objectives are achieved by the relevant deadlines.
If a council finds any place where the objectives are not likely to be met, it must declare an AQMA, which could be just one or two streets or much bigger.
AQMAs must have been declared on or before 31st March 2017 to be eligible for the funding.
Applications must be received by 2pm on 22nd December 2017.
