MOD takes aim at greener future with new roadmap

As part of the UK-wide climate change strategy, the MOD aims to contribute to the UK’s 2050 net zero target by reducing emissions and scaling up the transition to renewable energy

MINSHIP embarks on bulk carrier biofuel trial in quest for carbon-neutral shipping

The firm is trialling a new biofuel which it suggests will generate up to 90% less carbon dioxide emissions than conventional shipping fuels

Biofuel process ‘more efficient than photosynthesis’

A new solar-powered electrolysis cell can convert carbon dioxide to biofuels and alcohols at record efficiency levels. The scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory who developed the process say it is the first time anyone has been able to rival the productivity of natural photosynthesis. They believe the discovery, which […]

UK to provide £6m to slash maritime emissions

The UK Government has committed to provide new funding for innovative technologies and fuels to reduce maritime emissions. In partnership with industry it will provide more than £6 million on trialling a range of energy saving devices, including state of the art propellers, waste heat recovery systems and rotor sails that use wind power to […]

German firm develops green oil substitute

A German energy company claims it has developed a sustainable alternative to crude oil. Sunfire says it has produced three tonnes of its synthetic ‘Blue Crude’ substitute, which is made from splitting steam into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy. The resulting hydrogen can then be efficiently converted into the replacement oil. The firm says […]

Scientists can barley believe a-maize-ing biofuel find

Scientists have developed a way to increase the efficiency of rice straw biofuel production. Significantly, the researchers from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Kyoto University claim the strategy can also be used to boost biofuel production efficiency from other crops such as maize, wheat and barley. During bioethanol production, a substance in plant […]

Biofuel output to hit 67bn gallons a year by 2022

The biofuels industry will grow to a capacity of 67 billion gallons a year (BGY) by 2022. That’s according to a new report from Lux Research, which says the sector will also see first-generation fuels like traditional biodiesel being replaced by newer low carbon fuels. First-generation biofuels’ 91.5% market share is forecast to drop nearly 6%, which is predicted to be filled by rapidly growing advanced biofuels as they […]
