Water-saving can cut running costs, save energy, where less hot water’s used, or moved – and cut carbon emissions. Getting started is easy – and water efficiency actions don’t need to cost the earth.
Water can be a forgotten utility, though by controlling it businesses – including SMEs – can often reduce their water consumption and bills by between 20% and 30% – and, sometimes, much more. There are carbon emissions linked to all water used at businesses, so reducing water used, cuts carbon too.
The importance of water will increase further, with hotter and drier summers expected in the UK. Steps to make water go further helps to keep supplies flowing – and reduces climate impacts that can drive higher temperatures.
If you have a water meter, then the black digits are the ones to look at, if it’s safe to access. Checking taps and other pipes and fittings more often will also mean you can see any drips, or running water. Drips can also stop water flowing at a business, so it’s worth a few minutes of your time.
Noting meter reads at least once a month, if not every fortnight, helps you to spot any water issues early, so you can take actions to stop it – and keep costs down.
Regular servicing and maintenance of taps, toilets and urinals – as well as any water efficiency devices in buildings – is important – so it’s known they’re working properly and no water’s being wasted.
Weekly drip and leak checks are worth it: Fixing a leaky loo can save up to 400 litres of water a day – that’d fill 1,825 full bath-tubs in a year, where 80 litres of water was used per bath.
Only heating water you need to use, including in work kitchen kettles – or processes and other actions by staff around your business and products – means you can keep energy costs down, reduce carbon emissions and your carbon footprint.
Colder weather can also impact water pipes at businesses too, including pipes underground, so steps to be prepared for the changing weather helps. Seasonal plans and checks each quarter help you be prepared.
As many SMEs are part of UK supply chains for larger businesses, they contribute to Scope 3 carbon emissions. So, it means looking closer at cutting carbon emissions, overall, can give a boost to competitiveness and winning future business.
So, power your progress towards more efficiency – and green targets in the UK, by looking more at your water and tapping into the opportunities out there.
Many organisations will already have looked into tap efficiency, flow rate controls and processes involving water – and these are all important – though looking a little further ahead will help future budget planning and, ultimately, the bottom line.
Scott MacIndeor, who leads the Advanced Services team at Water Plus, said: “Quick to install water-saving measures will deliver immediate savings, including an average water-saving of 34% at more than 40 sites in 2023* – though there are longer term projects also underway, that will see significant results.
“As not every business is the same on their water needs, even in the same sectors, longer-term solutions are also worth looking into. Options to recycle water have become even easier to install at sites and we have a team working on future projects as organisations are seeing that preparing ahead, makes clear business sense.”
Technical water efficiency experts at Water Plus have helped organisations of different sizes, across sectors, manage their water more easily, efficiently and effectively, saving energy where less water needs to be moved, or used.
Engaging employees will help drive additional benefits. Employees can be a great source to suggest changes and different approaches to improve efficiency with water and processes even further, along with flagging areas where water waste may occur, such as a leak.
Work with organisations around their water use has seen Water Plus win a Global Gold in Water Management in the Green World Environment Awards 2023 and a UK Customer Satisfaction Award in 2023.
Water Plus provides water and wastewater billing and customer service for businesses in England and Scotland, along with a range of technical water services and information around water efficiency, for sites of all sizes, across sectors.

There’s also an easy to use online sustainability platform – provided by Zellar, one of our exclusive partners, which helps businesses, to calculate and understand their carbon emissions and build an achievable plan to track and reduce emissions, based on their size and sector.
Sustainability actions taken add up to a Zellar score, which those using the platform can share to showcase their great efforts and positive impacts for the environment and communities.
Zellar has already helped more than 1,300 SMEs save an average of £889, with a Return on Investment (ROI) of 200% for actions to reduce emissions. Following Zellar’s SMART sustainability plan can help the average organisation reduce its energy consumption by up to 33%. Check them out at: www.zellar.com/waterplus.
