This document sets out the government's detailed waste planning policies. It provides the planning framework to enable local authorities to put forward, through waste local plans, strategies that identify sites and areas suitable for new or enhanced facilities to meet the waste management needs of their areas.
It sets out how we will preserve material resources by minimising waste, promoting resource efficiency and moving towards a circular economy in England. It sets out how we will minimise the damage caused to our natural environment by reducing and managing waste safely and carefully and by tackling waste crime.
The Waste Management Plan for England is an analysis of the current waste management situation in England. The plan does not introduce new policies or change how waste is managed in England. Its aim is to bring current waste management policies together under one national plan.
‘Maximising Resources, Minimising Waste’ is the waste prevention programme for England. The cross-departmental programme sets out government’s priorities for managing resources and waste, in line with the resources and waste strategy for England. The programme aims to move to a circular economy by keeping goods in circulation for as long as possible and at their highest value. This includes increasing the reuse, repair and remanufacture of goods.
Through the Net Zero Strategy, 2021, the UK is working towards the near elimination of biodegradable municipal waste to landfill from 2028.
The government pledged to leave the environment in a better condition for the next generation. It details how government will work with communities and businesses to do this.
