UK zero emission vehicles soar by 43% in a year

The number of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) in the UK has seen a significant rise, with a 43% increase over the past year.

Zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) are a type of ultra low emission vehicle, which means they produce less than 75g of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

ZEVs include:

  • Battery electric vehicles (BEVs)
  • Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), also known as hydrogen-powered vehicles

As of March 2024, there are 1,100,000 licensed zero emission vehicles on the road, representing 2.7% of all vehicles.

In the first quarter of 2024 alone, 91,000 zero emission vehicles were registered for the first time, marking an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Zero emission cars accounted for 15% of all new car registrations, a figure that has remained steady from the previous year.

Additionally, zero emission light goods vehicles (LGVs) saw a substantial growth, with 6,000 new registrations in the first quarter of 2024, a 57% rise from the previous year.

These LGVs now make up 6% of all new LGV registrations, according to the Department for Transport.
