Asda unveils debut ESG rating

Asda has disclosed its initial external Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) rating, conducted by financial services ratings agency Sustainable Fitch.

The entity rating, on a scale of one to five, is marked at three, indicative of Asda's efforts to integrate ESG considerations into its business strategy.

The entity score stands at 54.

Sustainable Fitch's assessment acknowledges Asda's progress in meeting ESG targets, notably in the 40% reduction of operational carbon dioxide emissions since 2015 and ongoing endeavours to enhance packaging recyclability.

In environmental performance, Asda demonstrates a reduction in emissions across all scopes.

Socially, the retailer's adherence to human and labour rights policies, coupled with a balanced workforce reflecting 49% female representation, contributes to a positive social profile.

Asda's initiatives to increase non-high fat, salt and sugar own-brand products and improve food nutrition labelling are also recognised.

The company plans to include climate-related scenario analysis in its 2023 accounts.
