SSEN to invest £10bn in UK electricity networks

The funding is predicted to enable the connection of up to 11GW of offshore wind projects

Big Zero Report 2023

Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN) has revealed an ambitious plan to invest £10 billion in the enhancement of electricity networks across the UK.

The company’s investment will focus on bolstering the network capacity to support the connection of up to 11GW of offshore wind projects.

The “Pathway to 2030 programme” outlined by SSEN entails the development of multiple onshore and subsea transmission links.

The investment will pave the way for the integration of the first phase of projects from the ScotWind offshore wind leasing round.

To accomplish this ambitious goal, SSEN Transmission plans to establish two high-voltage direct current links, each with a capacity of 2GW, running from Peterhead in Scotland to England.

Additionally, subsea links in Scottish waters and onshore cable link upgrades will be implemented as part of this investment programme.

SSEN Transmission is responsible for managing and developing the high-voltage electricity transmission system in the northern region of Scotland and remote islands.
