Net zero will cost aviation €‎800bn, industry fears

For the European aviation industry to successfully hit net zero by 2050, there will be an additional cost of €‎800 billion (£703bn).

That’s according to a report commissioned by the airline industry bodies, including Airlines for Europe (A4E).

Cleaner fuels would be the largest cost, with an estimation of more than €440 billion (£386bn) to develop them from oils and household waste.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) reduces the carbon emissions of each flight by 70% but is not produced at an industrial level yet and is more expensive than normal kerosene.

A4E said: “The report illustrates that Europe will need a stable and predictable investment environment and a consistent policy framework to ensure that European aviation can access the necessary capital.”
