‘HS1 slamming on brakes powers 375 homes’

HS1 claims its new regenerative braking technology will save enough energy each year to power more than 375 homes.

The high-speed railway is set to see financial energy savings of £1.7 million each year by slamming on the new brakes.

This technology converts the energy used to slow down the train into electric energy that is then sent back to the National Grid.

It also lowers the overall carbon footprint of HS1, requiring less power to drive the trains.

Director of Engineering & Sustainability at HS1, Richard Thorp, said: “Now more than ever, it’s important for the rail sector to work towards delivering innovations that are both environmentally friendly and financially sensible.

“This project does just that and shows the agility of the HS1 system to respond to challenging circumstances quickly with solutions that bolster our sustainability and cut costs.”
