Derry lauded for climate work

Derry has been hailed in a recent report for its climate action.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has been praised by CDP for its adaptation measures and the fact it became the first Northern Irish council to set a net zero target for 2045.

The region has been hit hard in recent years by heatwaves and flooding – but its implementation of a community resilience officer to help locals through the extreme weather has been celebrated in CDP’s report.

More than 60 local authorities in the UK provided data for the study, revealing that the number that have a climate adaptation plan in place has risen from a third five years ago to 77%.

Northern Ireland has continued its trend of performing well in CDP’s reports, with Belfast City Council having received an A rating last year for its climate mitigation efforts.
