Germany launches water strategy to combat drought

To combat drought and climate change, Germany has agreed a new national water strategy.

Protecting water supply in forests, towns and villages is the aim – as recent heatwaves have drained levels.

Another year of heat is expected to follow this year, with the colder La Niña cycle now coming to an end.

As part of the strategy, guidelines for water distribution in the case of shortages for certain regions have also been  developed.

Aside from this year, aims for forest restoration and goals for green spaces in general have also been included in the strategy – up until 2050, with the country having committed to net zero by 2045.

Environment Minister Steffi Lemke stated: “The consequences of the climate crisis for people and nature are forcing us to act.”
