Polestar working on batteries for electric boats

Electric vehicle maker Polestar has signed a large agreement to supply batteries and charging systems to electric boat company Candela.

The Swedish businesses’ deal represents the first of its kind between automotive and marine industries.

Candela claims its boats use 80% less energy at high-speeds than traditional motorboats, while producing almost no noise in comparison.

Polestar’s batteries will power hydrofoils built by Candela – that lift the hull above water and allow the boats to travel just over the surface.

Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, commented: “As a battery supplier to Candela, we can help drive the transition to cleaner oceans and lakes and electrify waterborne transport.”

Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela, added: “While electrification of cars has come a long way in the last few years, the marine sector has fallen behind.

“Marrying our efficient hydrofoil technology to high-capacity batteries from Polestar means we can speed up the mass market adoption of electric boats together.”
