New York seek to procure 2GW of new offshore wind power generation

New York is seeking to procure at least 2GW of offshore wind power that will generate enough renewable energy to power at least 1.5 million homes.

Under the third offshore wind solicitation, New York is introducing a first-of-its-kind “meshed ready” offshore transmission configuration, based on recommendations from the New York State Power Grid Study, which will facilitate the transition of offshore wind projects to a future system “that can grow over time and provide greater reliability and flexibility”.

It is also emphasising in-state manufacturing, inclusive economic development and climate equity and setting a minimum US iron and steel purchase requirement for all projects to encourage domestic steel production.

New York currently has five offshore wind projects in active development, with the initial portfolio totalling more than 4,300MW, which will power more than 2.4 million homes and is expected to bring $12.1 billion (£9.9bn) to the state in total.

The projects are also estimated to create more than 6,800 jobs.

They support New York's goal of developing 9GW of offshore wind projects by 2035 – enough to meet 30% of the state's power needs.

Governor Kathy Hochul said: “New York is proud to continue leading the way in offshore wind development while establishing a blueprint for building a locally-based green economy.

“Today we are putting words into action and making it clear that New York State is the national hub of the offshore wind industry. The clean energy transition is driving significant private investment and family-sustaining jobs in communities across the state and we are setting ourselves up for success with a brighter and more sustainable future.”
