Mercedes F1 team invests in SAF

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One (F1) team has announced its commitment to invest in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), becoming the first sports team within the sport to do so.

Purchases of SAF will be used to cut the team’s Scope 3 emissions – used for flights to Grand Prix locations and business air travel.

It claims that it can half the carbon footprint of its air travel with the amount of SAF it intends to buy.

By 2030, the F1 team hopes to achieve net zero emissions.

Team CEO Toto Wolff said: “SAF has the potential to transform the way we travel and the impact that we have on the environment.

“This is a topic that I think about a great deal personally as well as professionally. I fly a lot; the team flies a lot.

“If we must fly, then we need to find a better way to do so and SAF is the best solution available to the aviation industry right now.”
