UK and Taiwan collaborate for renewables and net zero

The UK and Taiwan have held the joint Energy Dialogue between the two countries for the fourth time – discussing how to promote offshore wind, biomass and reach net zero by 2050.

Chaired by BEIS, the participants agreed to improve Taiwanese port infrastructure for trading in offshore wind and ideas were discussed on how to develop biomass with Taiwan Power Company.

The UK highlighted the importance of floating offshore wind in the net zero transition, with an agreement made to start a joint research project between the two countries focusing on ways to improve grid resilience in Taiwan.

John Dennis, Representative at the British Office Taipei, said: “Since the last Dialogue it has been excellent to see Taiwan publish its net zero roadmap and take steps to enshrine its targets in law.

“Our growing partnership is perhaps most clearly evident in offshore wind, where we now have 36 UK companies set up here in Taiwan to support the development of the sector as it rightly aims to become a hub for the region.”

Taiwanese Minister of Economic Affairs, Wang Mei-Hua, added: “To tackle climate change, we have announced the target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

“Taiwan and the UK have common goals of continually developing low carbon energy and achieving net zero emissions. I hope both sides continue to exchange views in the energy field in the future.”
