R&D projects devoted to zero-emission tech will receive the investment

Big Zero Report 2023

The government is providing £12 million in funding to boost zero-emission ferries, ships and vessels.

Announced by Maritime Minister Robert Courts, the new investment will go towards research and development projects to stop pollution in UK seas.

UK SHORE is a new taskforce launched by the government to make the maritime sector more sustainable and will be responsible for implementing this funding and cutting the carbon emissions of UK shipping.

Domestic UK ferries alone account for one million tonnes of carbon emissions, with this being considered a key area to tackle by the Prime Minister in his Ten Point Plan.

Mr Courts said: “At COP26, we pledged to create a green maritime legacy for generations to come, and UK SHORE puts us at the forefront of the global green maritime revolution – supporting thousands of green jobs around the country.”
