Liverpool Uni bags £1.3m to create low carbon chemistry lab

Energy use in its lab will drop by 45% in the next four years

The University of Liverpool has secured £1.3 million funding to develop a low carbon chemistry lab.

Provided by Research England, the funding is going straight to the university’s Materials Innovation Factory (MIF), which will implement new measures to cut energy use by 45% during the next four years and its annual carbon footprint by 415,000kg.

The MIF provides office space for more than 300 researchers and laboratory teams will now be able to monitor their energy usage, with solar panels fitted on the roof space for power generation.

The funding is part of a pilot initiative to understand how funded research centres can realise net zero targets.

Professor Wiebe Van Der Hoek from the University’s Faculty of Science & Engineering: “This project will allow us to take a holistic approach to the environmental sustainability of such a large-scale and high energy-use chemistry research facility.

“Our joined-up approach will have a marked impact on the carbon footprint of the MIF and we will ensure that this approach is transferable to other large and complex lab environments, both on the university campus and in the wider research sector.”
