Green electricity and gas verified for emissions reporting

Green electricity and gas verified for emissions reporting

The renewable energy within SSE Energy Solutions' Green Electricity and Green Gas has been independently verified and assured by EcoAct.

The renewable electricity generated from SSE’s own hydro plants and wind farms is already backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). And the renewable gas SSE Energy Solutions provides to customers is backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) or Biomethane Certificates (BMCs). But it’s important to have third-party verification to give customers additional credibility when it comes to reporting their Scope 2 emissions.

EcoAct is an international climate consultancy and a CDP Accredited Provider. As part of a rigorous assurance process, EcoAct assessed the environmental claims of SSE’s Green Electricity and Green Gas products against the GHG Protocol reporting and quality criteria. They analysed the REGO-backed product specifications and evaluated the REGO balance for the most recent Fuel Mix Disclosure period. The design and operation processes (including a sample batch of product-specific transactions), risk management and data processing for the renewable gas and electricity was also tested and confirmed by EcoAct.

This independent verification has come at a crucial point in the country’s journey to net zero, as more businesses and organisations recognise the role renewable energy plays in the transition. Research conducted by EcoAct found that 83% of FTSE 100 companies are purchasing at least some renewables to power their operations, which is up from 67% in 2020. And in response to the COP26 climate summit and the urgent goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, EcoAct anticipate this demand will continue to grow and believe the transition to renewable energy will be an essential part of our journey to net zero.

SSE Energy Solutions is committed to helping businesses and organisations tackle the climate crisis. An increasing number of companies, large and small, are seeking ways to reduce emissions and cut their carbon footprint, as the UK government tasks us collectively to hit net zero by 2050. As well as the renewed EcoAct certification, SSE’s four core 2030 business goals, aligned to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), have been upweighted to drive faster decarbonisation across the next decade.

Mark Keeling, SSE Energy Solutions Sales Director said: “A growing number of businesses are talking to us about renewable energy and reducing their carbon footprint. That’s why this year’s verification from EcoAct is more important than ever. Having an independent verification from a respected third party like EcoAct means we can help even more organisations display their environmental credentials with real conviction.”
