RWE plans €1.5bn green investment in Ireland to support net zero goal

RWE is planning to invest €1.5 billion (£1.24bn) in green generation capacity in Ireland to help the country deliver its net zero ambitions.

It is committing to support the Irish Government's plans to transition to 80% renewable electricity generation by 2030, however, the energy company is calling for “faster planning decisions and clear policy frameworks” to deliver the target.

RWE is undertaking long term investments in onshore and offshore wind and battery storage projects across Ireland, with plans to grow its renewables business across a portfolio of technologies.

The company's largest development project in Ireland is currently the Dublin Array offshore wind project, which is being developed in partnership with Saorgus Energy.

The wind farm will consist of between 45 and 61 turbines and once fully operational, it will generate between 600MW to 900MW of clean electricity.

Speaking at an event in Dublin last week, Cathal Hennessy, RWE Ireland Country Chair said: “Renewable energy can help Ireland meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets and will also play a key role in delivering energy security for the Irish economy. But this will only happen if the correct policy frameworks are in place and adequate resources are available within key areas such as planning and energy provision.”
