Could biodegradable plastics be possible? – Amazon thinks so

Amazon is working alongside the US Department of Energy (DOE) to reduce plastic pollution with a new innovation.

It is developing a technology to convert existing plastic materials into a new material that can be recycled and it claims could even biodegrade in natural environments.

Amazon is working with BOTTLE, a DOE-backed project, to ensure the full life cycle of plastics is net zero.

It has stated that where plastics cannot be put back into the recycling stream, their molecular structure will be designed so that they can biodegrade.

Alan Jacobsen, Principal Materials Scientist at Amazon, said: “In partnership with BOTTLE, we plan to make significant progress in developing new technologies and materials that will lead to less material in landfills and more back into the circular economy.”

BOTTLE CEO Gregg Beckham added: “Finding a way to better recycle single-use plastics while reducing and ultimately eliminating their use is a grand challenge of our time and we’re committed to pursuing scientific advancement to this end.”
