Sony and Honda to team up to make EVs

Sony and Honda have announced their desire to work together to produce electric vehicles (EVs).

The move would bring together two of Japan’s largest manufacturing names and look to rival both Tesla and the ever-growing Chinese market.

Both companies would bring their areas of expertise to the production, with Sony looking to install its new sensor technology into the vehicles to boost autonomous driving.

The joint venture is predicted to become established this year, with the first EV hitting the market in 2025.

Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony’s Chief Executive, commented: “We want to lead the change in mobility, so we will create a joint venture and if Sony’s network platform and services can be used by Honda, or other car companies, we will be able to contribute more.”

This follows a huge drive in Japan to strengthen its position in the EV market, with Toyota and Nissan both announcing an intent to spend billions on EV development in the coming years.
