UK to provide Nigeria with £10m in climate finance

Minister for Africa Vicky Ford has announced the UK will provide £10 million to Nigeria to grow renewable energy infrastructure and boost climate action.

The African country has the capacity to produce around 7,000MW of power but due to the poor infrastructure in place it is estimated that only half of that reaches the grid.

The UK financing is not only expected to improve the private sector but grow Nigerians’ accessibility to low carbon energy sources.

At present, power demand outweighs supply, which has led to many using generators that produce high levels of fossil fuels to keep the power on.
