Essar to build £45m hydrogen furnace

Essar Oil has announced plans to install a £45 million furnace powered by hydrogen at Stanlow oil refinery.

The company claims the move would be a first in the UK and it follows its pledge to invest £1 billion during the next five years to drive down its emissions.

The move will see the three existing furnaces decommissioned and replaced with one larger single furnace that can run on hydrogen.

Essar has stated that its improvement in energy efficiency will also see 16,600 tonnes of carbon emissions saved each year.

Deepak Maheshwari, CEO, said: “We have hugely ambitious plans for Stanlow and are committed to making it the UK’s first low carbon refinery.

“By affecting a significant and rapid transition to hydrogen, we are securing the long-term future of this vitally important national asset whilst also playing a key role in supporting the UK’s plans for building the low carbon economy of tomorrow.”
