Flexibility is key to reaching net zero – but why?

Flexibility is key to reaching net zero – but why?

We consume electricity with the flick of a switch and sometimes it can be forgotten what goes on to make that such an easy process – but every time you charge your phone or watch your favourite TV programme, a lengthy process is underway to make that seamless.

This is the role of energy networks, which has evolved over the years as demands have changed.

So, what are open networks and why is flexibility so important in the transition to net zero?

These are some of the questions we look to uncover in this week’s podcast with Energy Networks Association’s (ENA) Head of Open Networks, Farina Farrier.

She explained that with the rise in adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), heat pump installations and more demand on the grid, “the old system no longer works” and collaboration is now key, as we prepare for a world run on renewable electricity.

However, this adaptation does not come without its challenges and Ms Farrier guides us through how we can make our system more flexible and how the market will need to change to accommodate for this.
