They intend to advance development of a decarbonised regional energy cluster in the tri-state region of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia

Big Zero Report 2023

Energy company Equinor and science and technology firm Battelle have signed an agreement to explore the Appalachian Basin for potential carbon capture and storage (CCS) developments.

The memorandum of understanding will see the two companies advance development of a decarbonised regional energy cluster in the tri-state region of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

They will undertake feasibility studies to examine the regional potential for CCS and collaborate on stakeholder outreach.

Chris Golden, Equinor US Country Manager said: “The Appalachian Basin is an important energy-producing region that also shows great promise in being a leader for the decarbonisation of American industry. Our regional hub vision will meet tomorrow’s energy demands while maintaining America’s industrial competitiveness within a net zero scenario.

“Collaborating with Battelle, a like-minded organisation with extensive experience in key low carbon initiatives, brings us closer to delivering on our ambitions.”
