Canada’s Exhibition Place signs Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge

Exhibition Place, Canada's largest entertainment and convention venue, has signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge.

That ensures its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 to address climate change and its interim target aims to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030.

Since 2004, Exhibition Place has undertaken an environmental stewardship initiative, GREENSmart, which includes the promotion of sustainable development, environmental projects and green technologies and practices across its site.

Its Enercare Centre has also received the LEED Platinum award while the Beanfield Centre received the LEED Silver accreditation.

Exhibition Place has a geothermal plant installed on site, replacing the conventional heating and cooling system with a ground source heat pump, which helps save 110,000kWh of electricity and more than 15,000 cubic meters of gas a year.

That results in combined savings of around $18,000 and carbon emissions reduction of 34 tonnes annually.

The venue also piloted two green roof projects, which improved site stormwater management and helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to a wind turbine installed in 2002, which can generate up to one million kWh of electricity per year, resulting in annual savings of around $120,000.

Exhibition Palace assesses all aspects of waste management, emphasising material reduction and diversion and focusing on reducing, reusing and recycling.

Exhibition Place CEO Don Boyle said: “We are proud to be united with a global network of events and industry players to fight climate change, with the ultimate goal of eliminating the industry's greenhouse gas emission by 2050.

“Exhibition Place has a focus on sustainability, environmental stewardship and reducing carbon emissions throughout its daily operations and when considering pursuing new projects. Our renewable energy production, conservation and waste diversion sustainable initiatives, as well as the 3,045 trees we have located on the grounds, all contribute to the carbon reduction efforts at Exhibition Place and have established Exhibition Place as a world leader in energy efficient technologies.”
