‘If you don’t have a target, how will you get there?’

‘If you don’t have a target, how will you get there?’

We spoke with Alderman Tooling’s Managing Director, Karen Friendship, as the company have started tracking their carbon more closely using the future Net Zero Standard with CBN Expert, with the help of SWMAS.

She explained that the metalwork manufacturer consumes around £90,000 each year in its electricity usage, which not only led to exploration into buying better but also conserving energy.

Ms Friendship described the company’s carbon footprint as the ‘next standard’ clients and customers will be expecting of them.

She revealed that the key benefit of having a benchmark is that it allows you to set targets: “It’s irrelevant what your number is to start with, it’s about the journey of reducing it by 10% every year or getting to that net zero place by 2030, 2040 or 2050.

“Have a target, if you don’t have a target then you don’t know when you’re going to get there. Measure it, track it, have a goal – and then do something about those goals.”

She said the CBN Expert dashboard is “very simple [to use], measuring metrics for your benchmark year and then month on month. You can see trends and patterns forming.

“For instance, we’ve seen our gas triple over the winter months,” which led to the company considering issues it hadn’t before such as “insulation or heating systems.”

On the role SWMAS have played in helping Alderman Tooling adjust to using the Standard and tracking their carbon, she said: “[They’re] incredibly helpful, they’re there on the end of the phone with any assistance, given us the training required for the dashboard and we’re now just looking forward to building that data so we can make sensible business decisions when it comes to investments.”
