Middlesbrough £4.8m flood scheme complete

The government has invested £4.8 million into a flood scheme to protect 500 homes and businesses in Middlesbrough.

Construction of the Teesside flood scheme was led by the Environment Agency, following recent cases of heavy rainfall in the area.

The Agency claims that the new project will save Middlesbrough £58 million in the long-term in reduction flood-related damages.

It has also invested in planting more trees and creating bee pollination areas and bug houses to boost biodiversity in the city.

Jamie Fletcher, Flood Risk Manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Schemes such as this are essential for helping the Northeast adapt to climate change, which is bringing with it more extreme weather conditions and an increased flood risk.”
