Wärtsilä enters Belgian market with 25MW energy storage system

Wärtsilä is entering the Belgian market, building a 25MW energy storage system – one of the largest systems in the country.

The system will be in place to mitigate fluctuations in the grid, maintain energy frequency and reliability.

Belgium is looking to phase out nuclear power by 2025 and expand its offshore wind infrastructure, which will result in heavy changes to the demands of the grid.

The system is expected to become operational from the final quarter of 2022.

Pekka Tolonen, Energy Business Director, said: “We see a major opportunity and paramount; need to increase deployment of energy storage in Europe, allowing it to harness the full benefit of intermittent renewable energy across the continent.”
