COP26: ‘We need energy efficient networks that don’t use fossil fuels’

We spoke with Mats Pellbäck Scharp, Head of Sustainability at Ericsson, who explained the environmental impacts of the mobile industry and addressed what needs to be done to make it beneficial in the journey to achieving net zero.

“For handsets, the best thing you can do to decrease your own digital carbon footprint is to use your handset for one more year – because the majority is embedded from the production. While for a network, the majority is in the use of the network, so we need to make energy efficient networks that don’t use fossil fuels to be powered.”

He explained that most of the emissions produced come from running the networks and the answer to cutting the carbon footprint of the industry is to modernise them and ensure they are as efficient as possible.
