COP26: UK launches £290m climate change scheme for poorer countries

As COP26 enters its second week, the UK has committed to supporting some of the poorest countries in the world with £290 million in a bid to future-proof them against the impacts of climate change.

The new funding is expected to help countries across Asia and the Pacific to build the infrastructure needed to prepare for potential extreme weather conditions.

While today at COP26 is Adaptation, Loss and Damage Day and negotiators from around the world will discuss climate mitigation policies, the UK Prime Minister has urged countries to keep up the momentum and make bold commitments in the final week of the climate summit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "There is one week left for COP26 to deliver for the world, and we must all pull together and drive for the line.

"We have seen nations bring ambition and action to help limit rising temperatures, with new pledges to cut carbon and methane emissions, end deforestation, phase out coal and provide more finance to countries most vulnerable to climate change.

"But we cannot underestimate the task at hand to keep 1.5°C alive. Countries must come back to the table this week ready to make the bold compromises and ambitious commitments needed."
