Qatar to cut emissions by 25% by 2030

Qatar has set a new climate change plan, through which it aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2030.

The plan has been announced by its Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and places more emphasis on carbon capture and storage development.

It is also endeavouring to cut down the ‘carbon intensity’ of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities by the same amount and by the same year.

Ahead of COP26 next week, Qatar is the second Gulf State this week to have made new climate pledges, following Saudi Arabia’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2060.

Qatar is the largest producer of LNG in the world and is looking to expand its production to 127 million tonnes each year by 2027.

It claims its gas production will bolster efforts to tackle climate change, allowing more countries to adopt renewable energy in favour of coal or oil.
