Etihad Airways launches ‘Middle East’s first’ carbon offset programme

The national airline of the United Arab Emirates, Etihad Airways, has launched what is considered to be 'Middle East's first' carbon offset programme.

The airline said it will 'completely neutralise' the carbon dioxide emissions of its flagship 'Greenliner 787-10 aircraft for its operations in 2021.

The company plans to initially purchase 80,000 tonnes of carbon offsets from a forestry project in Tanzania.

The scheme, which is verified by the independent carbon offset quality assurance body VERRA, aims to support the airline's journey to halve its carbon dioxide emissions by 2035 and reach net zero b 2050.

Tony Douglas, Etihad Aviation Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “It’s encouraging to end a difficult year with such a positive move for the sustainable future of aviation.

"While the year brought many challenges, sustainability has remained at the top of our agenda, and the work hasn’t stopped. Expect to see more groundbreaking initiatives in 2021 as we learn the environmental lessons from initiatives with our Greenliner fleet and other sustainability initiatives”.
