AFRY steps back from new-build coal projects in move to drive down emissions

AFRY has announced that from January 2021, it will no longer get involved in any new-build coal projects.

The Swedish-Finnish engineering, consulting and design company, which operates predominantly within the fields of energy, industry, infrastructure and information technology, suggests the increasing demand for carbon-free energy "requires concrete actions from all industry players".

It notes it will continue to fulfil all ongoing projects until their completion but says after this point it will focus on supporting clients to hit their energy transition goals, stressing that the decarbonisation of the energy industry "needs to play a key role" in tackling climate change.

The company has emphasised that the global reliance on fossil fuels needs to be reduced and highlights a need for renewables to become more available and accessible.

Richard Pinnock, Head of Energy Division, said: "The complexity of the energy transition requires industry leaders to use their knowledge and expertise to help accelerate progress towards clean energy.

"There is no silver bullet. It will require careful balancing of unique environmental, economic and social drivers, while recognising our diverse needs globally, working together on this shared journey towards a sustainable future."
