Swansea Council in Wales pledges to become carbon-neutral in next decade

Swansea Council has announced a commitment to become carbon-neutral by 2030.

According to the plan, the target will be achieved by a further reduction in the local authority's carbon footprint and the offsetting of all remaining emissions.

The council will also prioritise a larger use of renewables and investments in energy-saving technologies.

During the past few years, schools in the region have been fitted with solar panels, almost 24,000 street lights have been replaced with LEDs and the network of electric vehicle (EV) charging points has been expanded.

Council Leader Rob Stewart said: "We have come a long way in recent years by embracing green technologies which are already reducing the council's carbon footprint.

"These are at the heart of the regeneration of our city centre and the £1.3 billion 'Swansea Bay City Deal'. But as a council, we know there is even more that we can do and that is why we are setting this ambitious target."
