US port authority fulfils target of all-electric shuttle bus fleet for major airports

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has announced it has completed the transition to all-electric shuttle bus fleets for major airports including JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty.

The 12 buses at each airport are forecast to reduce more than 1,600 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and avoid approximately 908,500 litres of diesel fuel every year, improving local air quality and decreasing noise pollution.

The 36 buses serve passengers and tourists travelling between airport facilities, including terminals and parking spaces.

The development claims to be the largest electric airport bus fleet on the East Coast.

The Port Authority also met another electric vehicle (EV) milestone this month, hitting the 130 mark on the number of light-duty vehicles that have been converted from diesel to electric.

The agency is now planning to convert 600 vehicles by 2023, accounting for 50% of its entire light-duty fleet - until now, the light-duty fleet is estimated to have contributed to a saving of 700,000 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions.

David Bobbitt, Manager of the Port Authority’s Central Automotive Division, said: "Through implementing sustainable technology solutions, we’re continually pushing our operations to be more efficient and more cost-effective."
