Iceland launches plastic-free bread and potato trials to reduce plastic footprint

Iceland has launched a new initiative that will see some of its stores trial plastic-free bread and potato packaging in a bid to reduce its plastic footprint.

The initiative will involve what claims to be the 'UK’s first' standard pre-packed loaf of bread in recyclable paper packaging, as well as a paper packaging format for potatoes.

The plastic-free packaging trials will also include apples, pears, strawberries, blueberries and mushrooms - the shop says together, they have the potential to reduce Iceland’s plastic footprint by more than 350 tonnes per year.

The packaging initiative represents a step in the British supermarket chain's journey to completely remove plastic from its own-label ranges by the end of 2023.

Richard Walker, Managing Director of Iceland, said: “If these trials are successful, the impact on plastic reduction across our almost 1,000 stores will be huge.

“We recently called on big businesses to join us in publishing their full plastic footprint, to support our call for enhanced transparency. Now we are asking our customers to try these plastic-free alternatives, as we continue to turn down our tap on plastic production.”
