Dutch social enterprise launches smartphone with 40% recycled plastics

Dutch social enterprise Fairphone has launched what claims to be the 'world's most sustainable' phone.

The Fairphone 3+ contains a total of 40% post-consumer recycled plastic, the equivalent of one o.33 litre plastic bottle, in the phone and its modules

The new smartphone package also includes a screwdriver to give consumers the opportunity to replace easily modules without having to buy a new device.

Customers are encouraged to send back their old or broken modules free of charge to give them a second life.

There is also no charger, no cable and no earphones in the box, so consumers can keep using the accessories they already own and help cut down on electronic waste.

Fairphone Chief Executive Officer Eva Gouwens said: "We believe that we must make the most of the materials used in consumer electronics.

"We’re moving one step closer to a circular economy by encouraging the reuse and repair of our phones, plus making it easier for users to keep their devices for longer."

Research shows people keep their phones on average for 2.7 years and less than 5% of the materials used can be recovered for reuse.

This behaviour contributes to the issue of e-waste, which is the fastest growing waste stream worldwide.
