EnBW to end coal-fired generation by 2035

EnBW to end coal-fired generation by 2035

German energy supplier Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) has announced plans to exit from coal-fired generation by 2035, ahead of the German Government's plan to phase out coal-fired power stations by 2038.

At present, EnBW, which aims to halve its carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, has a 4.6GW coal-based generation capacity.

The company is currently examining a potential fuel switch to carbon-free gases or hydrogen.

Although the withdrawal from coal-fired generation will lead to the reduction of the company's workforce at affected sites, the firm promises to create new jobs in other areas.

EnBW has also unveiled a series of measures that will help it become 'climate-neutral' by 2035, including a focus on the expansion of renewable energies.

This will be complemented by a commitment to more sustainable infrastructure and business practices.

EnBW Chief Technology Officer Hans-Josef Zimmer said: "We have already voluntarily discontinued 40% of our particularly carbon-intensive generation for both environmental and commercial reasons.

"By 2030 we will have withdrawn a further 2,500MW and are set to completely phase out coal-fired generation by 2035."
