Entergy announces net zero commitment by 2050

US utility Entergy Corporation has made a commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

It has outlined key actions that include ongoing integration of renewable energy resources, battery storage and innovative applications of conventional generation in its portfolio and collaborating with customers, key suppliers and industry partners to advance technologies and strategies necessary to reduce carbon emissions.

In addition, the company intends to evaluate and enhance its portfolio transformation with emerging technologies such as distributed resources, alternative fuels like renewable natural gas and green hydrogen, carbon capture and sequestration as well as advanced nuclear power.

It will continue to engage with partners and gain experience of enhancing natural systems such as wetlands and forests that absorb carbon and work across and between sectors such as transportation and industry on electrification and net emission reduction initiatives.

Entergy has signed new agreements with Invernergy for renewable energy development in the Gulf South region and Mitsubishi Power for fuel supply emission reduction solutions.

Its collaboration with Mitsubishi Power will initially see the companies produce hydrogen from renewables or nuclear power and explore hydrogen storage options, with their longer-term strategy including investing in the infrastructure needed to create regional opportunities for hydrogen technologies.

Leo Denault, Chairman and CEO of Entergy said: “Entergy remains focused on helping our stakeholders achieve their most ambitious aspirations in a reliable, affordable and sustainable way through new technologies and innovative solutions. In 2001, we were the first utility in the nation to voluntarily limit carbon emissions and today's 2050 climate commitment is another major step forward in enabling customers to achieve their desired outcomes while consuming the least amount of resources.

“As we deliver on our promises to customers, regulators and all key stakeholders, it's critical that we do so in a manner that promotes a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
